Live Entertainment - Music or Deejay

Helpful things to consider when planning for live entertainment
(Partially adapted from Singapore Weddings)

Consider your budget
Musicians can cost anything from a few hundred dollars to a few thousand dollars, depending on reputation and experience of musicians. Hiring musicians is definitely not recommended if your budget is tight. Although it is true that having good musicians can make your wedding unique and memorable, it is important that you cover all other ‘basic items’ first. Live music at your wedding is a luxury and must only be considered if your budget allows for it, after all other ‘basic’ expenses have been taken into account.

Qualifications of musicians
This is a crucial aspect. Musicians can make a wedding perfect, and they can also ruin a wedding. It would do you and your guests good to make sure that your musicians are competent. Ask for a sample recording from them to get an idea of their standard and style of playing. Ask also for the credentials and experience of the musicians you are planning to hire. It is preferable that your musicians have at least a tertiary or professional performance qualifications.

Choose a good reputation over a cheap bargain
Because the quality of the musicians you hire can “make or break” your wedding celebration, look for musicians who are established and experienced in performing at weddings. Reputable groups would charge a higher rate, but that would be money well spent in return for professionalism, efficiency and a sense of responsibility. Be cautious of ad hoc groups involving half-past six musicians. There have been instances where a group of strangers get together to play for the first time on the wedding day. It is pointless risking your big day for a cheap deal.

Attitude of musicians
If you are not musically inclined, it may be difficult to evaluate the musicians based on their aptitude. However, do speak to them on the phone or meet with them in person to gauge the level of enthusiasm and dedication. It is important to hire musicians who are genuinely interested in providing you with good service and who would be responsive to your queries and requests.

Type of music combination
Do give some thought about what kind of music combination that would be most appropriate for your wedding. Smaller groups are recommended for weddings. After all, a wedding is not a concert and it wouldn’t be appropriate to hire a large group who would steal the limelight from the bridal couple. A popular choice among couples is the violin-piano duet. The violin is an instrument that is able to produce romantic soothing music suitable for a wedding. The violin is also highly versatile, as its tone is appropriate for a wide range of music, including classical, light jazz, pop, oriental and movie soundtrack music.

Hi, I think it would also be good to talk about the new licensing rule which came into effect in Jan 2010. this is quite a headache for most couples who are planning for the montage/ march in songs as well.
