ROM Preparation Checklist

Here's a checklist in preparation for your ROM. A ROM is as equally important as your customary wedding because you will exchange vows with each other and be legally married!

The following are a basic list of things you have to prepare before your ROM.

1. Pick a date and E-file at ROM's website.
Please note that the solemnisation can only take place after 21 days of E-file and within 3 months of E-file.

2. Solemnizer / Justice of Peace (JP).
You have to choose a Solemnizer for your ROM only if you are holding it outside of ROM grounds.

3. 2 Witnesses.
Anyone above the age of 21 years old can be the witnesses for your wedding.

4. Attire.
For the Groom
Coat
Shirt
Tie
Shoes

For the Bride
Dress
Accessories ( Earrings, Necklaces etc. Prepare your own in case the make up artist's accessories are not suitable )
Shoes

Before you sign up for your Bridal package, ask the Bridal Studio to throw in a Coat and Dress for your ROM. If you have a bridal package already, negotiate with the Bridal Studio to provide the attire for you at a nominal top up fee.

5. Makeup and Nails
Makeup
Source for a Makeup Artist to do your makeup and hair.

Check with your Bridal Studio to provide the following services if possible. This will be a cbeck on the skills of your Makeup Artist and can be considered as part of the Trial Makeup in the Bridal package.

Manicure and Pedicure

The photographer will be zooming in on your hands when you exchange rings so please make sure that your hands and nails are at their most presentable!

6. Bouquet of Flowers.
Choose a bouquet of flowers that will go along with your dress.

7. Wedding Bands and Ring Pillow
Source for your wedding bands and make sure they are ready at least 2 weeks before your ROM. Most jewellery stores provide complimentary Ring Pillows but be creative and look for alternative sources of Ring Pillows or customize your very own Ring Pillow!

Lots of people fumble when it comes to tying their rings to the Ring Pillow on the day of their ceremony! Be sure to read Tie Them to the Ring Pillow.

8. Guest List
Do note that there are only a limited number of guests you can invite if you are holding your ceremony in ROM. Decide carefully on who you should invite.

If you are holding your ceremony out of ROM's premises, check with the venue organizer what is the min and max number of guests you can invite.

9. Photographer / Videographer
Usually on the day of your ROM, couples would just engage the photographer to capture shots of the lovely moments when the couple exchange their vows and rings. But why not get a videographer to capture the everlasting moment on film?

During the wedding banquet, a video of the couple exchanging vows can be broadcasted to your guests.

10. Venue
Are you going to hold your ROM within or out of ROM's premises?
The venue has to be decided and confirmed before you E-file. You get to customise your own vows , wedding decorations , invite more guests, dine and wine with your guests if you do it outside so why not? If you want just a simple ceremony, holding it within ROM would be best.

If you are holding your ROM externally, check if the venue organizer is able to do up any decorations for you. If not, you can opt to do up your own decoration with the help of your family and friends.

11. Reception after the ceremony
If your ceremony is within ROM's premises
You could book a place and catch up with your family and friends for a celebration. Plan your transport arrangements in advance so the group is well taken care of.

If you are holding it externally
The venue organizer will take care of the food and seating arrangements.

12. Prepare your vows
If you are holding your ceremony out of ROM grounds, you can prepare your own set of vows. Do let the solemnizer know about your plans or ask if he/she has a sample for you to read out on that day.

Check on the following a day before your ROM

Ensure your attire is ready.
IC of Groom and Bride. Remind the 2 Witnesses to bring their IC along.
ROM Certs* and relevant documents.
Give a courtesy call to your solemnizer, makeup artist,photographer/videographer to remind him/her about your ROM.
Token for your solemnizer to reimburse his/her tranport costs.*
Collect your bouquet of flowers.
Don't forget your wedding bands and ring pillow!
Sleep early the night before to look your best for your ROM!

Before you sign up for a Bridal Package, it's good to ask yourselves the following questions:
- Do I want a ROM dress or tea dress ?
- Do I want many sets of gowns ?
- Do I want a lot of photos ?
- Do I want special effects or art on my photos ?
- Do I want to take photos at various locations ?
- Do I want to do overseas photoshoot ?
- Do I want coats for the Fathers or dresses for the Mothers, Sisters ?

If you have a lot of 'wants', you should look for packages that can accomodate most of them so that additional top-ups are minimised and this could help you save a lot. A basic package can cost from $2k ~ $3k, but a package with more gowns, coats, photos bundled can cost from $3k ~ $6k.

A wedding photoshoot is one of the most important activities before your wedding. How many times can you get to wear a beautiful wedding gown or tuxedo? It gives you great memories down the road and entertains your guests during the wedding dinner as they marvel at how wonderful you and your partner look to be in wedded bliss.

Since the wedding photos will be one of your major wedding memobilia, its important to get a professional photographer who is able to capture your photos the way you want it to.

Some very important factors to consider before you choose your photographer.

* Check out for recommendations from your family and friends! If the services of a photographer has been tried out , tested and given the thumbs up (ask them to show you the album if you want assurance), you can shortlist them immediately.

* The porfolio of the photographer is very important! Always request to view the works of the photographer that will be taking your photos. Ask to look at as many samples as possible to determine if you like the style. A complete wedding album would be much better than randomly selected shots as you want to view the entire works of a photoshoot instead of just a few good ones that the photographer has selected.

* Professional photographers have different style of shooting photos. So its important to know what kind of photos you like and shortlist the photographer who can meet your requirements.

PHOTOJOURNALISTIC - Photos are taken spontaneously without any posing to capture moments and real emotions

TRADITIONAL - Photos are taken with standard poses requested by the photographer

GLAMOUR - The couple takes centrestage and are portrayed in a romantic or sexy manner

* Try to meet up with the photographer to discuss on what you would like to be featured and agree on the style of your photos. You can take this chance to discuss on the locations for your photoshoot as well. While meeting up, you can also determine if you are able to click well with the photographer. What to check with the photographer

Make sure that the photographer will be the one taking your photos on the day of the photoshoot and not the assistant! Ask what happens if the photographer is unable to make it on your photoshoot (for valid reasons), would the photoshoot be cancelled or will there be a replacement photographer?
When would the photos be ready for selection and when would the wedding album be ready. You have to make sure that the photos are on time for your Actual Day.
If you are not driving or fetching the photographer to your photoshoot locations, check if transport costs are chargeable.
Check on the cost of extra photos you might want to add on as a reference ( Negotiate on a pricing after you have selected your photos as they should be eager to sell you more photos. )

Over the years, the elements of the traditional Chinese wedding ceremony undergone changes and have been simplified to the traditional "basics" of the Three Letters and Six Rites.

Six Rites- The Proposal (求婚)
- Birth Date Matching (对生辰八日)
- Formal Betrothal (提亲)
- Wedding Gifts Presentation (下娉/过大礼)
- Wedding Date Selection (选吉日)
- Wedding Day (传统婚礼)

The wedding day had further associated ceremonies of: bridal bed setup; hair combing ceremony (上头); bridal procession; wedding ritual; wedding feast; nuptial rites and the return to the bride’s family home.

Wedding Gifts Presentation (下娉/过大礼)The groom and a friend or a matchmaker will pay a visit to the bride’s family, bearing the "bride price (娉金)" and betrothal gifts (娉礼) in sets of even numbers. The betrothal gifts are delivered up to a month and at least three days before the wedding day.

What are the Gifts?

Gifts may include incense, rice crackers, sweets (e.g. winter melon, rock sugar), roast pig or pig’s leg, jewellery, tea, lotus seeds, logan, red/green beans, red dates, nutmeg, oranges, pomegranate, lily, wine, bridal cakes, coconuts, betrothal jewellery and other items, depending on local customs, family wealth and requirements from the other bridal party.

Nowadays, the basic gifts from the groom include: "bride price (娉金)"; a pair of dragon and phoenix candles (龙凤烛); 2 bottles of liquor; boxes of traditional cakes (number to be determined by bride’s family beforehand) and 12 oranges (signifying each month of a year).

* Big basket --> for groom to bring the gifts and for bride to return to groom

Returning Gifts (回礼) and Delivering Dowry (送嫁妆)
The bride's family will accept the gifts and return part of the bride price and gifts so as not to present a picture of "trading off" their daughter. The bridal cakes will be distributed to relatives and friends, as a way of notifying them of the impending marriage.

The bride's family will also send the dowry to the groom's home with much fanfare. Dowry items may include new clothes, a chamber pot, filled for the occasion with fruit and strings of coins, and other items necessary for a wife to keep house with.

Modern brides may choose to have household appliances, clothing, and other practical items as dowry instead. Just remember to stick the "Double Happiness (喜喜)" sticker on all items.

* A set of bedsheet to be used for an chuang (安床)
* Comforter set, blankets, pillows, bolsters (tie together using red ribbon)
* A new set of pyjamas for the bride
* Xi 喜喜 stickers (include 2 big ones to paste master bedroom door and main wooden door)
* Sweet food items like longans, red dates, lotus seeds, rock sugar
* Variety of gold jewellery in a box for bride --> to show to the in-laws, then bride keep after actual day

Here's a review on Pan Pacific Hotel's Pacific Ballroom.

Ballroom
The Ballroom is spacious and rectangular in shape. Couples can consider doing an L-shaped march in from the left side for the first match in and right side for second match in or vice versa so they can do a longer march in and be able to engage more of the guests along the way. If not they can opt to do a direct match in from the centre , this would be a shorter route and guests who are sitting further away might not get to enjoy watching the blissful couple do their match in. Usually guests might feel left out if they are sitting too far away so do spare a thought for your guests!

There are no pillars in the ballroom and two big projector screens are available which enables guests to have a clear view of the surroundings.

Food
The food and serving portion is good! Guests are served individually by one waiter/waitress. The service is good and prompt and they will automatically top up your drinks.

Location
The carpark is utlizied jointly by shoppers in Marina Square and guests from other hotels. Be mindful as well that Pan Pacific has several ballrooms and could be holding several weddings together. If your guests are driving, its good to ask them to arrive early so they won't have to wait for parking space. It's quite torturous to wait for parking space on a weekend evening! If your guest arrive early and get a parking lot, you get to start the dinner early and on time as well. Win-Win situation. =)

For guests taking public transport, the mrt is nearby but they will have to walk for around 15 minutes to get to the hotel. If not there are direct buses to the area as well.

Reception Area
The reception area is spacious and good for guests to mingle and view photo albums while waiting for the ballroom to be opened.

NParks will be offering a 20 per cent discount for the Garden of Seasons at HortPark. The discount is only applicable for non-air conditioned venues in HortPark.

Before holding the ROM and Wedding event, couples have to handle the inevitable task of arranging parents of both parties to meet up. This is an essential meeting which involves careful planning as the couple has to make sure that both sides of the parents feel comfortable as it is the first time that they are meeting and the probable sensitive issues they have to discuss in terms of dowry money and gifts.

We recommend that it would be good for both parties to meet up for the first time to get to know each other better first. A sit down dinner would be good and if there is any awkward silences, the couple can always salvage it by talking or serving the parents with food and drinks before continuing any discussion. Of course, if the parents can hit it off it would be good. The couple should know their parents best so always discuss with each other before holding the first parents meet up session.

The couple should control the meeting by introducing each other's parents and initiate a small talk. It's always best to build up the comfort level before proceeding to talk about sensitive issues such as dowry and gifts. Only when both parties feel comfortable, the couple can start off by suggesting the topic of 过大礼 and the gifts before proceeding to the amount of dowry. Do take down notes on the agreed items.

Where to meet
Home
If the couple's house is ready, if not either one of the couple's home. The host party could arrange for lunch or dinner at their place. You will get privacy and feel more comfortable. You could probably watch tv or eat some fruits after the meal, and make the atmosphere more relax before proceeding to formal discussions.

Restaurant
If you have the budget, you could book a private room at a restaurant and sit down for a nice meal before discussing further. It's good to have a nice private and quiet area for a nice discussion. If a private venue is not possible, try to request for corner tables or a more secluded area which is not so noisy. Let the restaurant manager know that you are hosting the parents discussion and they should understand.

On the day of your ROM
If both sides' parents are ok with the idea, you could always arrange for a discussion after the ROM ceremony. If you have planned for your ROM ceremony to be held at a private venue, you could make use of the premises to hold a discussion. If your ROM is at the ROMM or at home, you could make arrangements to discuss over a meal after the celebrated event. After all, everyone's spirits would be great after the lovey dovey ceremony.

Cut the cost !

With the increasing prices of almost everything, it is practical to reduce expenses on selected items for your wedding, while still making it a memorable event.

Wedding favours
Most hotels provide the complimentary wedding favours for all your guests, so you do not really need to spend on this.

Why not?
Just stick to the favours provided and be happy about it. Afterall, the guests still get to walk away with something from the banquet.

Beer/Wine
Most hotels or restaurants provide complimentary barrel of beer or bottles of wine. You do not have to add on unless you are expecting a lot of drinkers at your wedding. You may however negotiate with your co-ordinator to provide more beer/wine.

Why not?
Removing alcohol totally from your banquet! Otherwise if you have decided that your guests prefer beer/wine to wedding favours, propose to your co-ordinator to exchange the favours with beer/wine.

Guestbooks
Most hotels do provide a complimentary guestbook for your guests to leave their well-wishes. Hence you need not have to buy one. However if there is any fancy design you prefer, you can always hint to your friends to give it to you as a wedding gift.

Why not?
Decorate a A3 cardboard and make it into a notice board for your guests to leave their well wishes ! You can frame it up after the wedding and hang it up in your love nest.

Ang Pow Box
Most hotels lend you the Ang Pow Box to your collection during the banquet. You do not have to buy one unless you have a use for it after the wedding.

Why not ?
DIY your own Ang Pow box according to your own budget and style! Get one of those A4 boxes, cut a slit on the cover and wrapped it up with your favourite wrapper or decorate it with your photos.

Wedding Cake
Most hotels or restaurants provide a dummy wedding cake for the cake cutting ceremony. So you do not have to rent one or engage a vendor to do a real wedding cake.

Why not?
Just stick to the dummy wedding cake provided. Afterall, the 8 or 9 course dinner will be enough to fill the stomach of your guests.

Ang Pow Giving

Wedding Morning
The following ang pows are given as a token of appreciation for their help at the joyous occasion. The ang pows are usually given by the parent of the Groom and Bride. However, it can also be given by the wedding couple.
• Makeup Artists
• Photographers
• Videographers
• Bridesmaids/Helpers
• Groomsmen/Helpers

The following ang pows are given as a symbolic gesture as part of the wedding customs.
• Matchmaker (who will come with the Groom to fetch the Bride)
• A guy (usually the younger sibling or nephew) who open the bridal car’s door for the Groom when he arrived at the Bride’s place

Gatecrash
Usually the Groom and his Groomsmen are expected to pass several tests in order to be given entry to the Bride’s house or room. Hence, the Groom is expected to prepare several ang pows for the challenges or get ready his best negotiator.

Wedding Tea Ceremony
During the tea ceremony, the Groom and Bride would receive ang pows or gifts from the family and relatives when tea is served to the elders. Sometimes, the elders would request for the wedding couple’s younger siblings or cousins to serve the couple tea as a form of respect. In return, the wedding couple will be required to give ang pows to them.

All the ang pows mentioned are given as a gesture of appreciation and receipt of blessings, hence the amount to be packed into the ang pows is very much depending on the family’s financial position and background.

Do you have little knowledge about wine but need to purchase your wine for your dinner?

Read this before you make a hasty decision to just simply grab any (wine) name you fancy! This is not a wine appreciation lesson so only the brief facts are summarised for your knowledge.

INTRODUCTION

Red Wine
After red grapes are picked, they are placed into barrels to be marinated. This process results in absorption of pigments from the skin and forms the color of the wine. Colors can range from light red to purple depending on the duration the grapes were marinated and the color of the grape skin. Tannins are produced in the process and it results in the "dry" feeling in your mouth after you consume wine. This feeling is similar to how you feel after you drink tea.

White Wine
After grapes are picked, they are pressed immediately so the skin is removed from the juice. This limits contact with the grape skin and results in the eventual color of white wine.

CHOOSING AND TASTING WINE

1) Appearance

Color: Color of red wines fades with time while white wines gain color. Examine the wine against a white background to have a better view

Viscosity: The slower the wine runs down the sides of the glass when it is swirled, the denser the flavor. It also means the alcohol content is likely to be higher.

2) Smell

Swirling the wine release aroma. Swirl before you have a whiff of it.

3) Taste

Wine should only be filled up to one third of the glass so it can be properly swirled before consumption. Swirl the wine in your mouth before you swallow to feel a taste of the wine.

4) Aftertaste

A long pleasant aftertaste is a sign of quality.

WINE STORAGE

The optimal temperature for storing wine is between 10 to 12 degrees Celsius. Increases in temperature results in chemical reactions and could damage the quality and affect the flavor of the wine.

Wine should be stored horizontally so the cork is always moist. This minimizes the cork from cracking and prevents air from entering the bottle and affects the quality of the wine.

Some tips

- Do note that the most expensive wine is not necessary the best wine for your wedding.

- Take note of the menu of your banquet. Asian cuisine is generally lighter and does not go with heavy red wine. White wine is recommended for Chinese food or seafood because it cleans the mouth and prepare you for the next taste.

- You should always taste wine before you purchase any. If in doubt, always check with the wine supplier for the popular and affordable choices.

- If you want to control alcohol flow during your banquet, advise the banquet manager that you will serve alcohol only when the dinner commences.

- A comfortable gauge will be to order 1.5 bottles of wine per table. But it depends on your crowd as well. Are they heavy drinkers? Do they prefer wine or beer?

- Wholesalers usually allow you to buy wine on consignment. You can order more and only pay for the number of bottles that was used during your banquet.

- Some hotels provide complimentary wines.

We came across many hearsay about what wedding couples should do and not do within the three months of their wedding. In these modern times, it is really up to the couples whether they want to follow the customs and observe the traditions, or go accordingly to their own wishes and beliefs.

Of course, everyone wants to enjoy a perfect wedding with blessings from the parents and the grandparents. Thus wedding couples are encouraged to seek opinions from their elders, and consult them for advices in regards to the traditional customs a.k.a. pantangs.

In this entry, we have listed some of the common wedding taboos for your considerations.

Wedding Taboos that the Bride and Groom should observe

1. Clash of Luck
To avoid clashing of luck, for three months before and after their wedding, the bride and groom will not attend a funeral or wake; attend a wedding; visit a lady who is in confinement.

2. Death of one parent
If one of the parents passes away, the bride or groom has to be in mourning. Should a wedding be conducted, it must be done within 100 days of the death, or postponed till 3 years (1000 days) after the death.

3. Bridal Bed
It is preferred that no one sleeps or sits on the bridal bed after its installation and blessing for fertility. If however, the groom needs to sleep on it before the wedding he should be accompanied by a young boy preferably born in the year of the Dragon. To leave one side of the bridal bed empty is considered a curse on the health of the couple.

4. Clash of Brides
If the bride meets another bride on the wedding day their luck may clash. The matchmakers or the bestmen from the two bridal parties will exchange red packets on the couple’s behalf to neutralize the effect of the clash.

Other not so taboo Wedding Taboos

1. Meeting one day before wedding
Chinese believed that the bride and groom should not meet each other the day before the wedding. However, this taboo is no longer strictly observed. A modified manner; the bride and groom will not sleep under the same roof the night before the wedding.

2. Removing Shoes
Do not take off your shoes until your chinese wedding ceremony is over. The modern custom is to remove the wedding shoes only after returning to the groom's home or bridal home after the bride's home visit to her parent's home.

3. Taking care of Roast Pig
If a roast pig is included as part of the bride’s home visit gifts, be careful not to break the ears or tails accidentally. An imperfect roast pig implies that the bride is not a virgin.

4. Use Even Numbers
Even numbers are used for joyous events. All red packets should contain even numbered amounts.

5. Avoid Mourning Colours and Flowers
White, blue, green are mourning colours and should not be used for weddings. Chrysanthemums are for funerals and not to be used for weddings.

6. The First Purchase
It is said that the first partner who buys a new item after the wedding will be the dominant one in the relationship.

Wedding taboos that the Others should observe

1. Clash of Bride's Luck
To avoid clashing with the bride’s luck, everyone in the groom’s home will hide to avoid the bride when the couple enters the groom’s home for the first time. They will return to the living room when the couple has entered the bridal room.

2. Clash of Horoscope
Persons born under horoscopes that clash on the wedding day are not invited as bridesmaids and bestmen, or invited to the wedding day activities. However, they can attend the wedding banquet.

3. Persons in Mourning
Persons in mourning are not to attend any celebrations and entertainment within 100 days of the death as a form of respect for the dead. So they will not attend any wedding celebrations. Mourners engaging in entertainment and social activities such as weddings, birthday parties, festive visiting are considered being disrespectful to the deceased parent.

Strawberry Jelly Hearts Cheesecake

Celebrate your Valentine's Day by making a Strawberry Jelly Hearts Cheesecake together !!

Ingredients

Base layer

110g digestive biscuits (about 8 pieces)

60g melted butter

Cheese layer

125g cream cheese, soften at room temperature

50g icing sugar

2 tablespoon gelatin powder (fish or beef depending on your diet)

40ml boiling water

1 teaspoon vanilla essence

Jelly layer

½ box Jelly crystal (strawberry flavour)

100ml boiling water

100ml cold/normal water

Strawberries

Preparation
1. Chop the biscuits into fine crumbs. You may want to use a food blender to do the job or place the biscuits into a plastic bag and press with a spoon.

2. Cut the strawberries into slices, preferably in heart shapes.

Process
1. Mix biscuit crumbs & melted butter together.

2. Press the crumbs and butter mixture firmly with the help of a spoon onto the base of a 18cm cake tin. Chill for 30 minutes.

3. Heat a pot filled with some water until just simmering and place a bowl inside the pot. Dissolve the gelatin powder and 40ml boiling water in the bowl. Keep warm.

4. Using spoon or an electric mixer, beat the softened cream cheese, icing sugar and vanilla essence until smooth & creamy. Blend in gelatin solution and mix well.

5. Pour the cheese mixture into the cake tin. Layer the strawberries on the cheese mixture. Chill for at least 3 to 4 hours.

6. Dissolve the jelly crystal in the 100ml boiling water, followed by the 100ml cold/normal water. Pour the jelly on the cheese mixture.

7. Let it set before removing from the cake tin. And your Valentine's Day Strawberry Jelly Hearts Cheesecake is done !

Checklist : Wedding Lunch/Dinner Banquet

Location
Consider the accessibility of the venue.
Is transport such as mrt stations and bus-stops available ? If not , can a shuttle bus be provided for your guests who do not have a car?

Ballroom
Layout of the ballroom is important to ensure that your guests are able to view the march-in and stage without any blockages such as pillars. If there are blockages, cater for projectors or live feed to ensure they have a clear view.

The shape of the ballroom also affects your march-in.
Do you want a long or short march-in?
Find out if the main door leads straight to the stage or you have to do some turns in order to get to the stage.

Check on the number of ballrooms available if you are holding your banquet in a hotel. Some hotels have more than one ballroom so there could be more than one wedding banquet held on the same day.
You wouldn't want your guests to appear at another ballroom if clear instructions/signages are not available!

Number of tables
Check the minimum and maximum number of tables for the ballroom.
Try not to stretch the limit as you would want your guests to feel cosy and comfy in that setting. It's important to ensure there is enough space for everyone to eat, move around and take group photos.
When signing the contract, always try to set the mimimum number of tables to the lowest possible so as not to incur any charges if you can't meet the minimum closer to the date.

* Number of baby chairs available if you are expecting babies to attend.

One table usually seats ten guests while larger tables can accomodate up to twelve guests. But make sure this is not too cramped for your guests.

Most hotel provides a complimentary trial dinner for 6 or 10 people. The trial dinner is usually conducted one month before the actual wedding.

How many people are invited for the trial-dinner? Full or partial menu for the trial-dinner? Is the trial-dinner on a weekday or weekend? Whether there is extra cost if adding more people to each table?

Decoration (Flowers on table/stage, dummy cake, flowers along aisle)
Usually different themes are offered for selection.
A dummy cake is usually placed on the stage as part of the decorations.
Check if the flowers catered are from a reliable supplier.

* Whether table deco will be removed when banquet is served, some tall standing deco may hinder the process when taking table photos.

Check the design and colour of table/chair covers, especially for the VIP table. They play an important role too!

If chair covers are not provided, what will be the additional cost for the chair covers?

Reception Area
Reception area is important as it's the place where you receive your guests and that is also where they obtain information about their seating arrangements. It should be cosy enough for them to move around.

Remember that the cocktail session would be held at the reception area. Can it accomodate guests who turn up early for the cocktail before they are allowed to enter the ballroom? Will there be seats for the elderly if you are not going toto open the ballroom until much later?

Ask if the reception area is shared if the venue has more than one ballroom or whether another wedding banquet is held on the same day. Display visible and clear signages to avoid confusion.

Food
Decide on the type of cuisine you wish to have.
It's not just the quantity that matters! Quality is important too!
Ask your co-ordinator about charges for Muslim or Vegetarian food. Not all hotels have halal-certified food for muslims.
Some hotels offer meals for children too.

At the same time, you may want to check their first dish music/song and request if can change accordingly to your preference.

What is the number of tables a waiter/waitress will be serving? Who is their pool of banquet waiters/waitresses?

Drinks
Soft drinks and chinese tea are usually free flow throughout the event.

Majority of hotels will provide a complimentary 30 litre barrel of beer which amounts to around 80 plus glasses. If not a 30 litre barrel will cost from $680 onwards. The best is to neogotiate for free flow of beer if possible! But this usually applies to weekdays and 4-star hotels =)

For wine, an estimation of consumption should be based on 1.5 bottles for every table. If you have 30 tables, you should have 30 x 1.5 bottles ready for guests. To cut down on alcohol consumption, its best not to serve alcohol during the cocktail. Serve alcohol when the dinner starts.
Ask about corkage charges if you are bringing your own wine. Check if corkage can be waived.

Several companies offer wine on a consignment basis. So it means that you can order as much as you want and return those wine which have not been opened for consumption for a refund. Contacts will be provided in another post.
Some hotels offer you a complimentary bottle of wine per table!

How many complimentary barrels of beer/bottles of wine are included in the package? How many litres per barrel/bottle? Cost of extra barrel/bottle? Can they throw in an extra complimentary barrels/bottles? What are the corkage charges for hard-liquor, stout and wines?

Wedding Favours
Hotels will usually provide wedding favors for all your guests. There are usually different types of favours to choose from, consumables and non-counsumables.

On top of wedding favours, are complimentary fruit cakes or chocolate pralines provided? If fruit cake is provided, what is the cost involved if you would like to have chocolate pralines?

If you don't not wish to have any wedding favours, can you exchange it for other options like more wine?

Carpark
Hotels will offer complimentary packing for a certain percentage (usaully 20%) of your confirmed attendance.
Check on the number of lots that can be reserved for your guests.
Ask about the location of the carpark. Some of the carparks are actually not located within the hotel.

Invitation cards
Hotels will offer complimentary invitation cards (not inclusive of printing) for a certain percentage (usually 70%) of your confirmed attendance. Check the different available designs and printing rates. You may source for your own printers too.

Bridal Suite
Most hotels will offer complimentary one or two nights stay in the hotel suite. While some hotels offer complimentary day use room for helpers, some hotels throw in a complimentary one-night stay for standard room for helpers. If you have overseas guests, you may want to check out the discounted prices offered by the hotel.

Some hotels even provide welcome set meals for the couples, topped with cakes, fruits and chocolates !

How many complimentary nights of stay is provided? If only one night, try to get two nights. If they provide anniversary dinner voucher, try to ditch it in exchange for an extra night stay.

Guide for solemnisation

Here's a list for you to check to ensure that you get everything ready before you take your vows and exchange rings to become Mr and Mrs!

1. Decide if you are holding your solemnisation at or outside ROM. Then decide on a date and time. Click here if you need ideas on a location outside ROM.

2. If you are holding your solemnisation outside ROM, you need to look for a solemniser. Click here for the list. Its best to meet up with your solemniser to obtain a consent form and get to know him/her before your ceremony =)

3. Next, you need to E-file at the ROM website. Take note of the earliest and latest date you have to e-file! The solemnisation can only take place after 21 days of e-file and within 3 months of e-file.
Example: If you file your notice of marriage on 1 February, The earliest solemnisation date shall be 23 February and the latest solemnisation date shall be 1 May.

If you intend to hold your solemnisation at ROM, you are advised to e-file 3 months before your solemnisation date in order to secure the date and a good timing at the ROM.

You will have to get ready the following before you e-file
- Names and IC number of Bride-to-be and Groom-to-be
- Names and IC number of your two witnesses (they must be at least 21 years old)
- Chosen solemniser's license number (For solemnisation outside ROM)
- Date, time, address of solemnisation location (For solemnisation outside ROM)
- Credit card for payment
- Make sure your printer has sufficient ink! You need to print out the confirmation notice and important instructions you have to take note of.

4. Once you are done with e-filing, you have to take note of the date and time you have to go to ROM for Verification and Statutory Declarations. BOTH of you have to turn up.
You will need to bring the following
- Original ICs of Bride-to-be and Groom-to-be
- Photocopies of your two witnesses' ICs
- Solemniser's consent form (For solemnisation outside ROM)

You will receive the following (For solemnisation outside ROM)
- A copy of the Certificate of Marriage
- A duplicated copy of the Certificate of Marriage (For Bride, Groom, Witnesses and Solemniser to sign on the solemnisation day)
- A return envelope

5. Finally ... Remember to get your rings ready by then! =)

As your wedding draws near, you need to do a time plan and schedule of events that should take place on your big day! You don't want anything to go wrong on the big day after these months of planning.

Here's a guide on what should happen on that day and who needs to be around

The Night Before the Big Day
· Have you collected your gowns and suits and flowers?
· Tie car decor to bridal car
· Ensure everything is packed for the hotel stay on Big Day
· Hair combing ceremony if necessary
· Bride to avoid washing hair the night before
· Bride to avoid drinking too much water the night before
· Bride and Groom MUST sleep early! You are supposed to look your best on your BIG day!

One of the most popular highlights of your big day – the gate-crash !

Although the Bride may choose to be involved in planning the gate-crash games for her husband, on the actual day, it’s really the Sisters who are calling the shot. While some Sisters would check with the Bride on the demands she has for the Groom, others prefer to do it the torturing way. WHAT ?! Come on, that would be the last thing that the Bride and Groom wish to encounter. Being saboed by the Sisters after spending so much effort in planning a dream wedding? Think of the humid weather that we in Singapore are experiencing ... Don’t you pity the Groom in pants, long shirt, coat and tie. Which Bride wants to be received by a sweaty panting Groom ? Make it enjoyable for both the Sisters and Brothers ! Of course, the tasks should have a certain level of difficulty without being too humiliating to the Groom and Brothers.

START OFF WITH A THEME
Everyone loves a themed wedding. While it may not be feasible to arrange for a themed wedding, due to budget restrictions, it is equally rewarding to incorporate a theme to the gate-crash. To make the morning more interesting and presentable (for video purposes), Sisters can make game cards with instructions for the Groom and Brothers, as well as some props which might be needed for the games.

Example: For a Bride who is a big fan of Jay Chou, we had used the Jay’s song titles for each stage of the gate-crash and rewarded the Groom and Brothers with milk after the Cowboy Dance !

Example: For a Groom who is usually "as blur as sotong", we adopted a sea-themed gate-crash and made the Groom and Brothers danced to the music of "Under The Sea" in seaweed skirts !

酸甜苦辣
While we support the 酸甜苦辣dishes, we recommend Sisters to prepare individual servings rather than mixing all the flavours into one big cup of disgusting juice. Of course if each of the Sisters is able to gulp down a cup of the disgusting drink, well, by all means, you may serve them to the Groom and his Brothers.

The typical dishes are usually made with biscuits, bread, buns and the easiest of all, juices.

酸 – Lemon, Lime, Vinegar, Sour-flavoured sweets ...
甜 – Honey, Sugar, Milk, Ice cream, Sweets ...
苦 – Bitter gourd, Dark chocolates, Ginseng pieces ...
辣 – Wasabi, Chili, Curry ...

Example: Harmless looking bitter gourd drink with colourful capsicum bits

Example: 酸 (skittles) 甜 (ice cream) 苦 (dark chocolate) 辣 (spicy flavoured chips) in a potty

PEN IT DOWN
It’s always romantic to have your loved one write down something for you, be it a short sweet note or an original poem. Prepare a big poster board and have the Groom express his love in writing or drawing !! The simplest of all will be to use the Bride’s name as the first letter of each sentence of the short poem. Otherwise, you can also make it compulsory for the Groom to include certain words into the poem and engage the Groomsmen by asking them to act out the words. Other options include writing down "10 reasons I love Thee" or signing "The Love Contract".

SERENADE YOUR LOVE
Not to be missed if the Groom is a good singer. This is the best time to perform and score points. For Bride living at 2nd storey or landed property, you can consider asking the Groom and Brothers to sing "对面的女孩看过来" from 1st floor or across the road. Bear in mind not to disturb the neighbours too much. If not, sing at the door and ask the Groomsmen to dance along. Recommended songs are "I Do Cherish You", "Now and Forever", "真心话", "你是我的老婆", and any other songs with significant meaning.

DANCE WITH ME
How about getting the Groom and Brothers to dance ? Surely even a non dancer would know how to shake their bom bom. Check that the corridor has enough space before planning. Pole dancing may be fun, but add the spice and do a group dance ! Sisters can do their part by preparing some props to spice up the heat.

REWARDS
Everybody loves rewards ! After all the hard work of singing and dancing, surprise the men with treats in the form of bitter chocolate, sour lemon candy, wasabi peas etc … Haha, but if you are sincere in offering a reward, they would be glad to be given some cookies, milk, juices or energy bars.

We didn’t like this idea. It may be fun to see them to pose at each storey, but they will reach in a sweaty, and possibly smelly, state.

Surely this is not the time to test the masculine side of them. Similarly, we do not want them to smell ... especially if we are going to share the car rides.

Ask the Groom and Brothers to remove hair on leg or on any part of the body
Anyone short of a fur coat ? We don’t quite get the entertaining factor of this game ...

Ask the Groom and Brothers to wear bras and underwear and dance
Not aesthetically pleasing ... plus what are you going to do with the oversized bras?

Ask the Groom to hang a banana from XXX and one of the Brothers to peel and eat it
Why not try something more romantic instead of this brokeback stunt?

Our stand is that gate-crash games shouldn’t be done for the sake of having a noisy gate-crash party. If you want to test the sincerity and the Groom’s love for the Bride, there are many creative ways instead of thinking of torturous ideas that make the guys loathe gate-crash time. Make it meaningful and enjoyable for the Bridal party, and of course the end result would be lovely sweet memories (preferably captured in video) for the couple to commemorate their big day.

Your very own wedding cake

So you have decided to do away with the fake multi-tier wedding cake and use a real wedding cake of your dreams instead!

Here's some ideas!
- Will your wedding cake be placed indoors or outdoors? You need to let the baker know so they can make sure the cake wont melt before you cut it and have it served to your guests.
- Your wedding cake can enhance the atmosphere if you are doing a themed wedding. Synchronise your design with the theme that you are having.
- Do you have guests with special dietary requirement (eg halal food)? Then you need to ensure that the cake can satisfy their requirement if you are serving the cakes to them.
- Its better if you look through magazines and search the internet for designs so you can show it to the baker. Images are always better to put your ideal design across.

Budget tip
If you have the time and can manage with a little effort on your own, you could also get a simple cake and some tiers to place your cakes. Decorate it with cake toppers.

Cake toppers
- 3D clay figurine of the wedding couple. You can make this with angel clay and keep it as a momento after the wedding.

- Swans

Groomsmen and Bridesmaids

A wedding is not complete without your groomsmen and bridesmaids. They play important roles on your wedding day. Here's some pointers to consider before you select the privileged ones to form your bridal party!

Who?
Your best friends, siblings, cousins. Whoever you feel comfortable with.

Some people prefer to get those who are single to form the bridal party but who says that those who are married can't be part of the bridal party? It's really your choice :)

Bear in mind that the people you select should be able to at least interact well with each other. You don't want a fight or quarrel between them if they cant see eye to eye. Of course, the first meeting is important and you can plan something for them to get to know each other better if they don't know each other in the first place.

How many?

The Chinese believe that even numbers signify good luck but it really depends on how many bridesmaids and groomsmen you want.

Roles

Assign your bridal party roles in which you know they can excel in. They are supposed to help you and ensure the entire wedding runs smooth!

If there isn't enough people to fill up all of these roles, you still can ask others to help out. They need not necessarily be from all the people from your bridal party.

Chauffeur - Someone (preferably a safe driver) to drive the bridal car since the groom would be pretty tired out handling the gatecrashing and running about. The Groom should spend more time with the Bride in the car. Have a nice chat together and ease each other's nerves.

Drinker/Drinking party - If you don't want to get drunk during or after the wedding dinner, get buddies who can drink up for you! This is especially so for the groom. Remember you have to sign for the bill when the dinner ends!

F & B - You will be busy during the wedding dinner doing your march in, entertaining guests and trying to grab a bite. Leave the co-ordination of the food and drinks to someone from the bridal party. This person should have the authority to make decisions on the couple's behalf. Of course, you have to brief him/her on the following, say for example..

- When can the reserved table be opened up to guests who come in unexpectantly?

- Should more beer/wine be served if you run out of the given quantity by the hotel?

- When can the ballroom be opened up for the guests?

- When can the event officially commence?

Emcee - If they have the talent to emcee the event for you, why not? You can leave the emcee script to them and vet through after that so you can spend more time preparing your own wedding speech.

Main Coordinator - Appoint a main coordinator each for the groomsmen and bridesmaids. This important person makes sure that everything runs through smoothly and they are supposed to help the couple make decisions if anything goes wrong. You wouldnt want to be troubled by anything else on your wedding day. Concentrate on being happy and leave everything else to the coordinators if possible.

Reception Helpers - You need people to help with the registration during the wedding dinner. Try to get at least one family member to help out so they can take care of the relatives.

Time Keeper - The time keeper has to make sure that the schedule goes as planned and does not over run too much and delay other events planned in the schedule.

Treasurer - The ang pow and jewellery keeper. You will surely receive ang pows and jewellery sets during the tea ceremony. This person should be someone you trust very much and help to take care and keep your items safely. Same goes for the ang pows you receive during the wedding dinner. Give this person the code to your safe box in the hotel room and ensure all the ang pows are properly kept. Of course, remember to appoint one or two persons to accompany the treasurer when he/she goes up to your room with the ang pows.

Appreciation for the Bridal Party

You can do the following to thank the Bridal Party for their hard work

- Give them a treat

- Sponsor their Shirts/Dresses for the wedding day

- Thank them in your speech!

- Do up thank you cards/gifts for them

When it comes to choosing your album photos

About one month's long wait after your bridal photo shoot, the time has finally come to select your photos for the album !!

Keep in mind what you have already agreed on and paid for as part of the bridal package:
* Number of photos/poses (Usually one pose means one photo -> Check with your coordinator)
* Size of album (10R, 15R etc)
* With or without digital effects

Note: Digital effects refer to adding borders, fading effects, or overlapping two or more photos, etc

1st Viewing
Some bridal studios will let you view your photos in a sequential manner, whereby they have pre-arranged photos with similar background so that if you choose them, the photos will match nicely in the album. Others will pass you the entire stack for your own viewing.

# Do not be affected by the sequential photo viewing !! At first look, eliminate any photos that you find not nice. They can re-arrange the selected photos to match nicely in the album.

2nd Viewing
You will be asked to go through the eliminated photos again to double-confirm that you do not want them. If happens that you cannot decide for some of the photos, you can put them aside for later consideration. Go through the remaining photos to eliminate for the 2nd round.

3rd Viewing
If need to, go for the 3rd round of elimination.

Your Album Photos
So after confirming all those unwanted photos, how many photos are you left with ? 90 ? 50 ? 30 ?

For 40 photos and below, you can opt to choose a 10R album with no digital effects. Each photo will still be relatively big enough for viewing since the display would be one photo per page. Given the small quantity of photos, there isn't much to play around for digital effects unless you like your photos to come with flowery prints and borders to give that romantic touch.

* Usually no previewing for the layout of the album for single photo per page album

If you have chosen 40 or more photos, a bigger size album and digital effects would be recommended. Firstly, if you are going to have one photo per page (w/o digital effects), you may end up with a very thick album or separate to two albums. Secondly, if you are going to have digital effects with two or more photos in one page, a smaller album may not allow you to view the photos clearly.

* The coordinator will let you view the proposed design layout for your confirmation before proceeding to make the album.

Top Up Costs
Top up cost 1: If you have chosen more photos than what is listed in your contract, you will have to top up additional cost per photo
Top up cost 2: If you decide to upgrade the size of your album, you will have to top up additional cost
Top up cost 3: If you decide to add digital effects for the photos in your album, you will have to top up additional cost for the works

Usually the cost for 1 and 2 is combined, say at 10R, each photo is $X and for 15R each photo is $Y. Sometimes the coordinator would offer you a package price for all 1, 2 and 3.

Cutting Costs
For cutting costs wise, you can opt to eliminate more photos or justify the need to upgrade album size. Some couples will end up topping up about $1k while others can top up up to $6k !! Do your own calculations and commit wisely !! Do you want to spend moeny on your wedding album or for your romantic honeymoon ?

Wedding Speech

The wedding speech is another highlight of your wedding day. Take this opportunity to thank your partner, your family and relatives, bridal party, friends and guests. Speeches need not be boring if you prepare hard enough beforehand. Of course, it helps if you are a charismatic speaker. Do write out your speech on paper so you will not have stage fright or find that you are at a loss of words at the rostrum. Remember to smile when you are giving your speech :)

Greet your guests and thank them for their presence and gifts.

Thank your Bridal Party. Tell them how wonderful they have been throughout the preparations and during the wedding. Thank them for their friendship as well!

Thank your parents. Need we say more? Think about how they brought you up and how proud they will be of you on that day. Appreciate them and honour them on that day! Surprise them with a gift or sing a song for them if u can.

Thank your partner's parents. Thank them for bringing up your partner and all the help they have given you. It helps that you acknowledge them in front of everyone. Think of how proud they will be to have another son/daughter. Assure them that you will take care of your other half.

Thank your partner. Without your partner, there will be no wedding! Bring up what he/she has done and praise him/her! Make it interesting/touching. Tell the guests why he/she is the one for you.

Preparation for Photoshoot

Taking your bridal photoshoot is a tiring but fun affair ! Other than renting/buying your gowns and engaging a good photographer and makeup artist, there are some essentials you need to consider and decide before you go for your photoshoot

1. Date and Day: Weekday is preferred as outdoor venue may not be as crowded as on weekend. Alternately, you may consider doing studio photoshoot on one day and outdoor photoshoot on the other. This way, you will look "fresher" for the outdoor photoshoot, but of course you may need to top up for the extra service of the makeup artist and photographer.

2. Outdoor Venue: Did you meet at a significant place ? Where do you usually hang out during the dating days ? Is there a place that give you a special memory ? How about using nature as a backdrop or buildings with unique architecture ?

3. Casual Wear: A common trend nowadays ! You can both be dressed in white tops and bottoms, or a pink top for the bride and blue top for the groom. Alternatively, wear a funky top or your own customised t-shirts with your caricature printed.

At Least One Week Before
List of Things to Prepare: Groom

A few coloured, long sleeve shirts
A few ties
A pair of black pants and/or white pants

Tea Ceremony

The tea ceremony is the one of the significant event in a chinese wedding ceremony. It signifies the acknowledgement of the bride to join the groom's family formally and vice versa.

Preparing for the Tea Ceremony
Chinese tea is commonly used for the tea ceremony. You can also use chinese sweet tea for the ceremony as the sweet tea will symbolize the sweetness in the new union.

- Lotus seeds and red dates tea 莲子红枣茶: The lotus seeds represent the wish for the couple to bear children quickly and continuously.
- Longans and red dates tea 龙眼红枣茶: The longans represent a "dragon" and the wish for the couple to have sons.

The groom can arrange his sisters or relatives to assist in pouring the tea and washing the cups. The bride will arrange her own sisters, relatives or even bridesmaids to carry out the tasks.

For hygienic purpose, the tea cups must be rinsed after serving each elder. If the sink is not easily accessible, remember to prepare warm water for the rinse.

Remember to thank the helpers and present them with ang pows for their help !

Tea Ceremony at Groom's Side
The tea ceremony is usually first conducted at the groom's side. After the groom fetches the bride from her house, the bride is formally introduced to the groom's family and relatives through the tea ceremony. The ceremony can be conducted in the morning or just before the wedding banquet, whichever is convenient.

Tea Ceremony at Bride's Side
Traditionally, the bride will need to return home after 3 days, known as the 三朝回门. It is then the tea ceremony is conducted at the bride's side.

However modern couples prefer to arrange all necessary ceremonies within the same day for simplicity and efficiency. This is why after the tea ceremony at the groom's side, the bride may change into another gown, a cheongsam or a kwa to denote the passing of 3 days, before conducting the tea ceremony at bride's side.

For some family, the bride may choose to serve her parents tea in the morning before she is married. Because when she returns in the afternoon, she is already a married woman.

Who To Serve First
Generally tea is served from the most elder to the least. Though some families like to start with grandparents, others prefer to start with parents. There is no right or wrong of whom to serve the tea first. A guide is below.

5) Elder Siblings
6) Elder Cousins

Usually the father's relatives are served before the mother's relatives.

Serving the Tea
During the ceremony, the bride will stand to the right of the groom. The bride will served the tea facing the male elder, while the groom will served facing the female elder. The bride and groom will bow or knee to the elders and greet them properly while serving them tea.

If the one partner of the elder couple is not able to attend the tea ceremony, the other partner will drink on behalf of the absent spouse. Do note that tea is not poured out for a deceased spouse.

The bride would address her spouse's family members and relatives the way he would and vice versa. It would be embarassing if you cannot address the elders properly. Be sure to consult your parents prior to the tea ceremony.

Presenting and Accepting Gifts
After drinking the tea, the family member or relative would present a gift for the wedding couple. The gifts are usually in the form of ang pows or jewellery. The bride may choose to put on the jewellery gifts immediately or not to. However, bride must not reject if family members or relatives offer to help her put on the jewellery gifts.

The bride and groom would need to present gifts, usually ang pows, to the younger siblings and cousins who serve them tea.

Suit the Groom

Here is a general guide to choose the perfect suit:

* For the different types of suits mentioned in this entry, please refer to Dress up the Groom ! for illustrations.

Narrow Chest
A double breasted suit would do wonders to add bulk to your upper body, making you stand out on your big day.

Long Neck
Jackets with Nehru collars will create a less "skinny" neck.

Thick Neck
Wearing a suit with a Mandarin collar would be a good idea to "slim" down the neck. The Mandarin collar setup adds less bulk to the already wide neck.

Heavy
Anything that is slightly loose to hide the excesses without looking too baggy.

Skinny
A single breasted suit would be the preferred choice as a double breasted jacket would make you look like you are wearing your dad's oversized jacket.

Short
No coat with tails! A conventional suit would be the best.

For the differnt body combination:

Short & Thin
A short and thin groom should NOT wear double-breasted suits. He'll end up looking lost in it! A three-button jacket with pleated trousers or tuxedo pants is a great look for that short and thin groom.

Short & Broad
The short and broad groom should wear a single-breasted suit. A one-button or two-button suit that closes near his waistline is a perfect choice. Once again, if he has a large waistline, he should wear a vest rather than a cummerbund. Padded shoulders will also draw the attention away from the waistline up to the shoulders.

Tall & Thin
The tall and thin groom can wear just about anything. He can wear just about any color and style. If the groom is very thin but tall, he can try a double-breasted suit. This will give him a little extra padding in the chest area. If you want to look broader in the shoulders, ask for more padding in the shoulders. A pleated shirt will also look great on a very thin groom.

Tall & Broad
The tall and broad groom should also stay away from the double-breasted suits. It will just make him look more husky. He should also avoid pleated shirts. Also, if he has a belly, he should wear a vest rather than a cummerbund (the cummerbund will draw attention to his waistline and the vest will hide it).

Length of sleeves are judged with your arms relaxed, down and at the sides. The rule of thumb is to allow a very small amount of shirt cuff to be visible. The upper arm region should not be tight and bunched up. Ideally, the shoulders should be smooth over the arm. Be realistic about getting the "perfect fit" especially for rented suits. Most rental stores will alter coat sleeves and pants length.

Pants
Remember to wear the shoes that you will be wearing when you are doing the fitting of your pants. The purpose of bringing your shoes along is to gauge the kind of 'break' you want on the top front of the shoe when the pants are worn.

Although it seems like weddings are always about the Bride, lets not forget about the Groom too!

A well-dressed lady deserves an appropriately attired man. For that reason,
the Groom should wear an elegant and fashionable suit that shows off his personal style and makes a good impression on his wedding day.

A suit may be custom-made, rented, or bought in a shop. In any case, it should be acquired well in advance. The Groom's attire should be requested at the tailor's at least 2 to 3 months before the wedding in order to prevent any anxiety or undesirable situations arising from a lack of time.

TYPES OF SUITS

The Classic Suit
Austere, three-piece classic dress suits (two-piece is also an option) in pale colors suit any shape or size man, especially in the summer. Vests look elegant in silver-gray tones, but variations are available. The most important part is choosing the right tones to match the suit.

Single-breasted suits: This is the basic style. Most suits are single breasted. Usually there is a choice of two or three buttons for single-breasted suits. The front buttons on the suits are in a single straight row.

Double-breasted suits: These are a much more stylish and formal suit worn by older men; the double-breasted jacket looks classy. The suit jacket has one of its fronts overlap the other with two sets of buttons.

The Tuxedo
A tuxedo is an elegant evening jacket with satin lapels available in single or double breasted styles. The coat usually has either a turndown or stand-up collar; lapels from the outside are trimmed with sateen or silk. Tuxedo pants have a silk braid coming down the outside stitch. Black is traditional for tuxedos, but a tailored gray, dark-blue, or even white tux can be appropriate.

The Tailcoat
A tailcoat is a jacket with pointed laps cut just below the waist in front and has knee-length "tails" in the back. Pants that go with a tailcoat should have no cuffs.

Cutaway
The cutaway is a formal daytime tailcoat with very smooth lines and is usually grey or black. It is often referred to as a "morning coat" and is worn for formal daytime weddings (up to 6pm).

Stroller
A cousin to the cutaway, this short coat is worn for informal morning and afternoon weddings. Traditionally, the stroller has the same cut as the tuxedo, but is usually grey rather than black and does not have satin lapels.

Shoes should be a classic black or white to match a black or white suit respectively.

Accessories
When deciding on the Groom's accessories, every tiny detail should be accounted for. These details create the image of the Groom. Accessories include: tie or bow tie, neckerchief or scarf, tiepins, clips, collar buttons, handkerchiefs, boutonniere and sash.

Neckerchief or Scarf
An elegant neckerchief or a scarf is one more alternative to a tie. Neckerchiefs have a romantic look. If you choose this route, make sure the neck of the vest is not too low. Higher neck lines will hold the scarf in place and prevent it from getting out of the vest.

Tiepins, Clips, Collar Buttons
An unusual clip or a beautiful tiepin with pearls worn with collar buttons will make a suit look elegant and accentuate the Groom's particular fashion sense. Usually, the Bride takes on the responsibility of buying these accessories for the Groom.

Handkerchiefs
A matching handkerchief placed in the breast pocket will complete any suit or tuxedo.

Buttonhole
A buttonhole is a small flower or a nosegay that is worn on the left lapel. It is made from the same flowers and in the same colors as the Bride's bouquet, showing the Bride and Groom to be a pair.

Sash
A sash is a wide belt worn with a tuxedo only. It may be of any color. If worn with a bow tie, they should be the same color.

Cummerbund
A cummerbund is a broad waist sash, usually pleated, which is often worn with single-breasted suits.

上头 Hair combing ceremony

The hair combing ceremony is one of the traditional chinese wedding ritual that is still widely performed. However, practice differs for this simple ceremony.

Some believe that both the bride and groom must carry out the hair combing ceremony for it to be meaningful. Others believe it does not matter.

Some believe that if the parents did not carry out the ceremony at their wedding then the children should not do so.

To comb or not to comb?
The bride and groom should check with both set of parents on the details and come to an agreement to avoid any unhappiness.

So how do you comb?
The night before the wedding, the bride and groom at their respective homes will bathe or shower with water infused with some pamelo or pomegranate leaves. The chinese believe that these leaves will ward off evil.

Each will then put on a set of new clothing and shoes. Pajamas and bedroom slippers are acceptable. Each family will find a good fortune woman to conduct the ceremony.

A good fortune woman is one who is married with surviving husband, children and grandchildren. Mums of bride and groom may carry out the ceremony if they are good fortune women. Otherwise find relatives or friends who are.

The bride and groom will sit in front of an open window with the moon visible or in front of a mirror. Candles and incense may be lit for those who are ancestor worshiper or Taoist.

Some practice combing the hair three times and some four. The good fortune woman will bless aloud as she combs the hair. The four blessings are:

一梳梳到尾 Yi Shu Shu Dao Wei，
First combing, continuous from beginning till end, may you be together all your lives.

二梳百年好合 Er Shu Bai Nian Hao He，
Second combing, may you have closeness and harmony in your marriage for a hundred years, till a ripe old age.

三梳子孙满堂 San Shu Zi Sun Man Tang，
Third combing, may you fill your home with children and grandchildren.

四梳白发齐眉 Si Shu Bai Fa Qi Mei。
Fourth combing, may you enjoy a long life together, till your hair and even eyebrows are white.

A sweet soup containing pink and white rice ball will be served to the bride and groom after the hair combing ceremony. The round rice balls symbolize a complete and sweet marriage.

At the end of this ceremony, the bride's mum will give her with a treasure box filled with some jewellery and token red packets. This is a farewell gift to a treasured daughter who is leaving her childhood home. The chinese believe that a person only becomes an adult after marriage.

Tie them to the Ring Pillow !

That's right, it's for securing each wedding band to the pillow to be ready for the special moment. But how to tie that knot so that you can remove the ring with ease for your vow taking ? Read on to find out !

Secure the Wedding Bands to the Ring Pillow

1. Form a loop with one of the ribbons

2. Place one wedding band over the loop and hold as shown

3. With the free end of the same ribbon, tie a knot around the ribbon loop

4. Pull both the loop and free end to tighten the knot

5. Adjust and position the wedding band as required

6. Place the wedding band flat on the pillow if you wish

7. Repeat steps 1-7 for the other wedding band using the other ribbon

Remove the Wedding Bands from the Ring Pillow

1. Using the one hand, pull the wedding band away from the pillow. You may use the other hand to hold the pillow if required.

2. Pull the wedding band all the way and the knot will automatically be released.

Types of Gown Fabrics

The fabric of the wedding gown plays an significant part in achieving that perfect look. Here listed are some of the popular choices when selecting the fabric for a gown. The photos are for reference only, as when it comes to choosing the fabric, one would also need to feel it and see the overall design of the gown.

Chiffon
It is lightweight, sheer, and transparent. As it is very soft and limp. It is most suitable for soft and flowy styles.

Duchesse Satin
A widely popular choice for bridal gowns. It has a smooth surface with a sheen. Fiber content may be silk, polyester, acetate, or rayon. It is full-bodied and has a heavy hand. It is suitable for fuller skirt bodice or A-line skirts.

Georgette
It is like chiffon but with a crepe-like finish and less sheer, and has a heavier feel than chiffon. Drapes well and is suitable for soft styles too. Wears well.

Laces
Comes in many types, like French laces, European laces, Alencon laces, Lyon laces, Chantilly laces, etc. There is also the all-over lace, appliques, trims, etc.

Organza
A crisp, sheer, transparent and lightweight fabric. Made of silk, nylon, or polyester. Commonly used as layers or frills on duchesse satin bridal gowns in some designs.

Satin
Comes in very shiny surfaces, to the more subdued sheen. Unlike duchess satin with a stiffer feel, satin is soft and drapes well. Suitable for slim silhouette styles, and designs that requires draping characteristics. Comes in various forms and weights.

Shuntung Silk
Fabric has a textured effect, like thicker threads along the surface. It is also available in 2 surfaces. The other side has a shiny satin finish.

Silk Taffeta
Fabric has a subtle sheen that has a characteristic rustle with movement. Has a stiff feel.

Thai Silk
A smooth shiny hand-woven silk with a stiff feel.

Tulle & English nettings
A fine hexagonal mesh fabric. Comes in various softness. It is also used for ballet costumes and wedding veils.

Dresses for the Full-Figured Bride

Instead of trying to fit your body to the wedding dress, choose a style that will minimize your flaws. No matter your shape, there is a wedding dress for you. A good rule of thumb for brides with problem areas is to always try to draw attention away from them. When required, you can always get a seamstress or tailor to help you achieve that perfect fit.

Accentuate the positive. Whatever you feel is your strongest feature – strong legs, a lovely cleavage, a shapely hips -- choose a wedding ensemble that enhances that attribute. If you have a beautiful neckline, don't hide by covering your neck. If you have pretty shoulders, show them off with a strapless or off-the-shoulder gown. You already know what your best features are - it's up to you to emphasize them.

Remember, gown shape, waistline, neckline, frills, material and even accessories, all play an important part in achieveing your perfect look. If you are not comfortable in a particular gown, always try another one until you find a suitable one that will make you a pretty and confident bride.

FULL-FIGURED BRIDES
If your body is well-rounded all over, go for an A-shaped dress. This style appears to give length to the entire body, while reducing width, so it works wonders on full-figured bodies because of its slimming effect.

You might also want to look for an A-shaped gown that has a low V-neck or scoop neckline because they are the most flattering on full-figured bodies.

You might also want to stay with traditional wedding gown materials, rather than shiny gowns, which tend to give people a heavier look.

ROUND WAISTED BRIDES
If your middle area is the thickest section of your body, consider a Princess gown. This style minimizes the waist area by flaring out just below it. Brides with this body shape should also try on dresses that have pleats, as long as the pleating starts below your hip.

Other options are gowns with an Empire waistline or an A-shaped fitted bodice that flares out from the bust line. Both of these styles are ideal for hiding a thick waist.

BOTTOM HEAVY BRIDES
If your hips, thighs and/or buttocks are larger than your bust and waist, look for a wedding dress with an Empire waistline. Because this style is narrower right below your bust area, it nicely hides your hips and back side.

A gown with a fitted bodice and a wide flowing skirt on the bottom also works well for this body type. But stay away from pleats or gathered fabric flowing down from the waist.

Brides with wide hips may want to consider an A-shaped style, a Basque waistline, or even a Ball gown with a full skirt that forms at the waistline.

This is a style that suit any bride.

HALTERNECK features straps which join at the back of the neck or a high neck with wide armholes. This design usually has a very low cut back, so it is best worn without a bra.

Brides with thin figures or narrow shoulders.

HIGH neckline has a high neck similar to the cheongsam look.
Suggested for brides who are petite or want a dress that has a lengthening effect.

The choice of gown/skirt shape strongly influences the overall style and look of the bridal gown. Some shapes such as the ball gown have a classical feel whilst shapes such as column have a modern sexier appeal. Your decision on what skirt shape to have should not only depend on what you like or what the latest fashion is, but what looks good on you.

Figure shape and height is an important factor for anyone deciding what skirt style to have. Beauty comes in all different shapes and sizes, and the best way to look your best is to focus on the real image of yourself.

Think about what you would normally wear, your favourite colours, where the ceremony is taking place and the tone you are aiming for -traditional, avant-grade or relaxed. Once you have a clear idea of these elements in your mind you can start applying them to your wedding outfit.

The following illustrations are a guideline to some of the main bridal gown skirt shapes and the body shapes they best suit - and don't suit ! You may decide to reject all these styles and go for something totally off the wall.

BALL GOWN / FULL SKIRT is the most traditional style of skirt for the bride who is after a classic elegant look. The skirt's appearance can vary depending on the fabric used and the range from structured and heavy looking to soft and light. This type of skirt is often combined with a fitted bodice and natural or dropped wasitline, suiting a wide range of figures, especially those with curves.

Recommended for full figured, pear shaped, and slim brides.

May be considered for brides who are petite or have a hour glass figure.

EMPIRE LINE dress is for brides who don't want a figure-hugging gown. The skirt starts just below the bust and is not as full as a ball gown or has an A-shape.

Recommended for a small-busted, slim figure and brides who do not have a defined waistline.

May be considered for bride with an inverted pear shaped body.

Not recommended for brides with hour glass figures.

PRINCESS dresses are typically "A-shaped", with vertical seams running from the waist or shoulders to the bottom of the skirt. The degree of flare in the skirt can vary from slight to extreme with a fitted bodice.

Recommended for the most body types.

Not recommended for brides who do not have a defined waistline.

COLUMN/STRAIGHT design is for brides who want a modern, chic look. The slim profile closely follows the body's curves and looks flattering for tall slim figures.

Recommended for tall, slim or petite brides.

May be considered for brides with a hour glass figure shaped body.

Not recommended for brides who are thick or short waisted, full figured, or have a pear shaped body type.

MERMAID styles flares out at the bottom. This type of skirt is quite often bias cut (i.e. cut on the diagonal). Great for brides wanting to accentuate their curvaceous figures.

Recommended for brides with a figure that they want to show off.

Not recommended for brides who are petite, thick or short waisted, or have an inverted pear shaped body type.

Three Gown Fittings

Before your first fitting, decide which accessories you want to wear with your dress and buy or order them. Buy also your undergarments and bridal shoes. You need your wedding-day lingerie and shoes for all your fittings -- a simple bra switch or change in heel height can cause your dress to fit improperly.

YOUR FIRST FITTING
The first fitting usually takes place about 6 weeks before your wedding day. Bring along one eagle-eyed friend or family member for advice. This fitting is to ensure 2main things:

- That your gown is the right size, color, and design (neckline, train, sleeves, etc.)
- That your designer knows what she's doing. A designer will most likely have an assistant who helps you get into your gown. The designer should then begin looking for places where your dress needs to be taken in, let out, shortened, lengthened, or altered -- hence the term "fitting".

Be sure to observe
- The way the material falls
- How the waist feels
- How the chest area fits
- Any funny puckering, bunching or bulging
- The stitching, embroidery, and beading are all in good shape
- Everything is well-sewn

Look in the three-way mirrors to view all angles, and ask for another hand-held mirror if necessary. Speak up if you see anything that you don't like -- or forever hold your peace.
The designer should be able to tell you why a problem exists, and what can be done to fix it. Though you shouldn't expect miracles, it is your prerogative to have as many fittings as it takes to get the perfect fit.

YOUR SECOND FITTING
About 1 month before your wedding, you should have a second fitting. Bring along your foundation garments, bridal shoes, jewelry, and any accessories you plan to wear on your big day.
And if you're not quite sure which accessories to wear and which ones to leave home, bring along a Polaroid camera as well, so you can see how each option looks with your dress.

In addition, you'll want to make sure
- All your concerns from the first fitting have been addressed and fixed
- You can move comfortably in your gown
- Your dress stays in one place as you move
- There is no obvious wrinkling, bunching, or pulling of material
- If you have a full-length dress, your hem skims the tops of the toes of your shoes

Once again, speak up if you see something that doesn't look right. If there is a problem, continue to schedule fittings until you are completely satisfied.

YOUR FINAL FITTING
When the day of your final fitting finally arrives, ask your mom and maid of honor to come along so they can learn about your gown.

Think about the following
- Does your gown need bustling? Ask the designer to teach your mom and maid of honor how to do it.
- Does your gown have complicated straps or buttons? Ditto above.
- What about last-minute wrinkles? Should you use an iron? On what setting? Is steaming a better option?
- What if you spill something on the gown? Are there certain products you should/shouldn't use?

When all is said and done, your gown should fit you like a glove. Take a look in the mirror, and join the ranks of gorgeous brides everywhere.

Ambience
Romantic because the hall is quite dark but its comfortable enough for you to enjoy your dinner.

Location
Very accessible if you are taking the MRT since its at City Hall.

Ballroom
One thing to note is that there are several ballrooms at Swissotel the Stamford. You might get lost or barge into another wedding because there are two different escalators serving the different ballrooms. Just remember to ask your co-ordinator to place signboards more strategically or get staff to guide guests to the correct ballroom.

Very high ceiling! Either you love it or you hate it ...

March-in is a straight route to the stage. There is one projector for the ballroom. The only bad point is that the tall flower stands along the aisle blocks your guests on the other side of the ballroom from having a good view.

No pillars! Dont you love ballrooms without pillars? :)

Air-conditioning is cold. Remind your guests to bring something to keep them warm :)

Food
Food is generally ok. Portion-wise is average

Modern twist to notable 过大礼 customs

过大礼 is one of the emphasized customs associated with Chinese Weddings.

Let’s take a look at the notable customs unique to Cantonese, Hokkien and Teochew dialects and how to do it with a modern twist.

CANTONESE STYLE (广东)

The Cantonese are quite particular about the bride wearing the red "kwa", which must have phoenix embroidery, for "groom receiving" and tea ceremonies.

A modern bride can choose to look ravishing in a silver "kwa" with intricate gold and silver embroidery instead of a red "kwa".

Among all the jewellery received by the bride from the groom, the most important is a pair of dragon and phoenix bangles (龙凤镯). These are to be worn together with the "kwa" on the actual wedding day, with other jewellery, as a token of prosperity and luck.

A modern bride may want to check if bangles in other precious metals or other types of jewellery can be substituted.

On the 3rd day of marriage, the groom will accompany the bride back to her family’s home and present a whole roast pig to his in-laws. The bride’s family will remove the middle portion of the roast pig. The pig head and tail will be returned to the groom’s family, together with a pair of trousers wrapped in red paper.

A modern twist to this is to get a small roast pig or to replace the roast pig with roast pork.

HOKKIEN STYLE (福建)

One essential set of items that the Hokkien bride must have in her dowry is "da yuan (大缘)" and "xiao yuan (小缘)". These symbolize that the bride is fated to be with her husband and his family. These are small pieces of "silver" resembling coins, and are to be placed with towels given to the husband’s siblings.

A modern couple may choose to place the coins in the newly weds' cupboard or room instead.

Hokkiens also place emphasis on the inclusion of traditional household items, like tea sets, bed linen, sewing kit, basins, in the dowry for an "obedient" wife.

If parents insist, a modern couple can buy a ready set from traditional wedding shops in Chinatown.

On the actual day, the pig's leg presented to the bride’s mother should be uncooked. This is a gift to thank her for "sow sai leo" (literally clearing of baby poo).

Nowadays, cans of stewed pig’s trotters are presented instead.

TEOCHEW STYLE (潮洲)

The most famous Teochew betrothal gifts is "si dian jin (四点金)", represented by a gold necklace, pendant, earrings and bangle. This is usually selected by the groom’s mother, and presented as a sign of favour to her daughter-in-law.

Jewellery is always welcome. Just jazz it up with modern designs. A modern bride may opt for other precious metals like white gold or platinum, with the inclusion of diamonds.

The Teochew wedding cakes are very specialized and must be ordered from a Teochew bakery. They are literally "big cakes", with dense bean filling and a flaky pastry skin.

Try ordering the cake in smaller sizes and in sweet and salty versions. Else cake vouchers are always another popular choice.

The bride's jewellery, along with her other accessories should reflect the formality of the wedding celebration. A small informal wedding calls for simple jewellery, while a large formal wedding calls for more elaborate jewellery.

Nowadays, brides often include rhinestones, diamonds, faux diamonds, crystals, gemstones and or a combination of them all in their wedding jewellery. They can work with all gown colours, but it is best to use a silver setting with white and a gold setting with other gown colours. Having said that, it's really a matter of personal style and budget.

As a general rule, the more glitter and detailing on the gown, the simpler the jewellery should be, while a more plain gown can support more opulent selection.

Determining the length of necklace

COLLAR - 12"-13". Usually made up of three or more strands and fits securely around the neck.

Wedding: This Victorian style looks lovely with a plunging or strapless neckline.
Casual: To wear with V-necks, boat necks, and off–the–shoulder fashions.

CHOKER - 14"-16". Usually made up of one to three strands worn closely around the neck, resting at the collarbone, accenting the neckline.

Wedding: The most classic version and generally works well with a jewel or bateau neckline.
Casual: To wear with any outfit and any neckline.

PRINCESS - 17"-19". It falls below the hollow of the neck and hangs just around the collarbone. A perfect necklace for a pendant.

Wedding: Perfect for strapless gowns. This style looks great with almost every bridal gown neckline, except for a high neckline.
Casual: To wear as a contract to low, plunging necklines and or add a pendant for a bold, eye-catching look.

MATINEE - 20"-24". They hang much lower extending closer to the breast area.

Wedding: This style hits the top of the bust and looks great with a bateau, jewel or a lower neckline with sheer fabric covering the décolletage area.
Casual: To wear for casual or business dress.

OPERA - 28"-34". Usually a long single stand that falls below the bust. Advisable for higher necklines and can be doubled as two choker necklace lengths.

Wedding: Not often a good choice for bridal gowns or bridesmaid dresses.
Casual: To wear with high or crew necklines with versatility to be worn as a single or double strand to transform from day to evening wear with elegant ease.

ROPES and LARIATS - Over 45". Ropes and Lariats are very long necklaces that can be worn to fit clothing or wrapped to create a two-stranded choker.

Wedding: Definitely a no-no.
Casual: Infinitely elegant and classic, the rope necklaces usually have hidden clasps placed in strategic locations to be transformed into multi-strand necklace and bracelet combinations. Lariats are another long-length necklaces that are unattached at one end so that you can tie them in various ways to deliver sexier results.

General Tips Based on Face Shape, Height, Figure

Based on Face Shape
- For Oval face, you gain flexibility in choosing a necklace because an oval face shape suits any necklace lengths.
- For Round face, an opera necklace length will be much better.
- For Heart shaped face, balance with choker necklaces because they soften and diminish the sharp angle of your chin.
- For Rectangular and Oblong face, choose choker necklaces with higher length because they reduce the length of the face.

Based on Height
- Below 1.6m in height, collar or princess length necklaces look best. V-Shape styles or Matinee necklace length will make you look taller.
- Between 1.6m - 1.7m, you can wear necklaces of any length.
- Above 1.7m, you can wear longer necklaces any length.

Based on Figure
- If you have full figured body, do not wear necklaces that lay on the breast line.
- If you have a large breast, you can choose necklaces that are more than 22" in length. It will be uncomfortable if you try to choose longer than this length.
- If you are flat chested, long thin chains will look nice on you.

Consider your budget
Musicians can cost anything from a few hundred dollars to a few thousand dollars, depending on reputation and experience of musicians. Hiring musicians is definitely not recommended if your budget is tight. Although it is true that having good musicians can make your wedding unique and memorable, it is important that you cover all other ‘basic items’ first. Live music at your wedding is a luxury and must only be considered if your budget allows for it, after all other ‘basic’ expenses have been taken into account.

Qualifications of musicians
This is a crucial aspect. Musicians can make a wedding perfect, and they can also ruin a wedding. It would do you and your guests good to make sure that your musicians are competent. Ask for a sample recording from them to get an idea of their standard and style of playing. Ask also for the credentials and experience of the musicians you are planning to hire. It is preferable that your musicians have at least a tertiary or professional performance qualifications.

Choose a good reputation over a cheap bargain
Because the quality of the musicians you hire can “make or break” your wedding celebration, look for musicians who are established and experienced in performing at weddings. Just attended a wedding at Novotel Clarke Quay.

Location
It was quite a distance to walk from the Clarke Quay Station. There is a bus-stop nearby though.

Reception Area
A very big reception area ! However, the area was cold and dim, and table layout was not provided. (Available on request) Washrooms are relatively nearby and lifts come directly to the ballroom.

Ambience
The floral arrangement in the ballroom is quite simple.

Phoenix Grand Ballroom
The ballroom has high ceiling and no pillars. Only one screen is available and it was quite difficult for guests who sat near the screen to view the video/photos played on the screen. March in distance is alright. Ballroom is spacious with about 30 tables.

Food and Service
Food is delicious and portion is just right. The waitress (who served my table)though not very professional, but friendly and helpful. Serving done in family style.

Grand Copthorne Waterfront Hotel

Attended a ROM and wedding dinner at Grand Copthorne Waterfront Hotel.

Location
Nearest MRT is Outram Park Station. Hotel is located quite conveniently at the corner of Havelock Road and Kim Seng Road. I took bus 51, alighted at the nearest bus-stop and walked about 300 metres.

Outdoor ROM Gazebo
Lovely fountain setting !

Drawbacks will be the relatively long walk (with stairs) from the main building to the gazebo and basically it's outdoor.

Reception
As the Grand Ballroom is the only ballroom at level 4, it is entitled to a very big and private reception area.

Ballroom
The ambience of the ballroom is very nice and romantic. I think the ballroom can hold up to 40 tables with comfortable walking area. It has high ceiling, L-shaped aisle and two screens.

The stage area is quite special. The background is not the usual curtain or flower setting, but with a real garden theme ! The backdrop of the stage is a transparent glass panel separating the decorations using trees, plants, flowers and a nice gazebo !

Food and Servcie
Food is served individually. Fish is fresh and overall taste is acceptable. Service is quite bad. (I thought it was only my personal experience, but counter checked with a friend who went on another occasion, and she shared the same sentiments) It was observed that there is no standard in serving food at every table. At our table, the waitress served from point to point, moving from one seat to another. Sometimes she would served guests after scooping a few portions, then scooped another few portions and served the rest of the guests. It was noticed that new glass of wine was served and previous glass removed even before guest finished the drink.
